In 1914, it was estimated that there were 40,000 Trentino residents living in the United States, with departures decreasing between the two world wars. Trentino emigration to Canada, on the other hand, gained momentum later, after 1949.

North American Trentino descendants who remember their roots regularly gather, sometimes organizing trips to their ancestral homeland.

It was on one of these occasions—the 25th edition of the Ittona Convention—that the municipality of Romeno decided to host a large group of Trentino descendants with official greetings, a concert, and a reception.

What is the Ittona Convention?

As mentioned above, this special event in Romeno is organized as part of the Ittona Convention, which for its 25th edition will be held in Pinzolo, in Val Rendena.

So, what is the Ittona Convention? It is the Federation of Trentino Clubs in the United States and Canada, bringing together the many organizations formed by the descendants of Trentino emigrants.

The Federation as it exists today was founded on June 20, 1976, in Hazelton, including all Trentino-Tyrolean clubs from Canada, the United States, and Tijuana, Mexico.

Just a glance at the surnames of the key figures of the Ittona Convention reveals their Trentino heritage: over time, the presidency and prominent roles have been held by individuals such as Joe Zanoni, Louis Rossi, Gino Inama, Walter Maturi, Rolando Inama, and Eileen Rossi—all surnames still commonly found on doorbells across Trentino today.

During the Ittona Convention, descendants of Trentino emigrants in North America will participate in transhumance festivities, organize a picnic at the Nardis waterfalls, and attend seminars.

The Program for Welcoming Trentino Descendants in Romeno

The 25th edition of the Ittona Convention will take place, as mentioned, in Pinzolo, in Val Rendena. However, the municipality of Romeno has decided to organize its own event.

From official greetings by the authorities of the Alta Val di Non community, the program will move on to a concert by the Storyville Jazz Band, a tribute to the descendants of Trentino emigrants overseas. Formed in 1986, the band is considered one of the most prestigious traditional jazz ensembles in Italy.

At the end of the performance, participants can enjoy a reception offered by the municipality of Romeno, featuring some of the most beloved local products: wine from the valley’s wineries, apple juice from Val di Non, and Trentingrana cheese. The entire community is invited to attend and extend a warm welcome to the Trentino descendants.

It is worth noting that the event also provides a valuable opportunity to visit Romeno, the birthplace of painter Mattia Lampi, whose frescoes can still be admired in various locations in the village (the works of his son Giambattista can be seen in the Parish Church).

Further details on how to reach the event are provided below.
